Good News for Coffee Addicts: Coffee Reduces Skin Cancer Risk

The way caffeine may protect the skin against the damage of UV exposure is revealed in a recent study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology".

There have been several studies showing that drinking tea or coffee may lower lower one's risk of contracting non-melanoma skin cancers. Unsure of the coffee's protective mechanism, researchers studied the effects of caffeine on human skin cells after exposure to UV rays. They found that caffeine blocks a critical checkpoint in the cell growth, causing cells to self-destruct and die. This fatal effect was seen only in cells that had been damaged by UV rays which are likely to become cancerous, while healthy cells were left unchanged.
